10k set to raise £10k after record numbers run

Over 450 runners took part in East Lancashire Hospice’s best ever 10k in Great Harwood yesterday.

Perfect running conditions enticed the biggest number of entrants yet in the hospice’s third annual run. And young runners didn’t miss out either with a 2k junior run attracting over 40 runners and a 1k fun run which 43 people took part in.

The event was held at Gaskell Motor Bodies who also organised the runs with East Lancashire Hospice. Around 40 volunteers helped out at the event including setting up, signing in and marshalling the route for all the races.

Organiser Nick Gaskell who also ran the race said runners found the course a challenge but very enjoyable with many already planning to take part next year. He said: “It was great to see so many people taking part for the hospice. The event is part of the community now. The course takes in Rishton and Great Harwood and there are a couple of challenges along the way including a bit of a sting at the end with the incline to finish, but when I came round the corner and saw the finishing line and everyone cheering the runners on, I was really proud to complete it and I’m sure many others felt the same. There were a few personal bests achieved too which is always great to see, and many runners have already said they’re looking forward to taking part next year.”

Hospice fundraiser Kimberley Hall said it was a brilliant event. She said: “We were delighted to see the hundreds of runners all taking part in aid of the hospice. Whether people competed for their best time, or their goal was simply to complete the route, all the entrants came together to raise much needed funds, and we’re on target for the event to raise over £10,000 for patient care. Without the time and effort given by all the volunteers and helpers and the sponsors who covered costs, the event couldn’t happen, so a huge thank you to all those who contributed.”

The event was sponsored by BPJ Properties and the medals were sponsored by Universal Cooling. T shirt sponsorship came from 24 7 Home Rescue, Universal Cooling, D Byrne Catering and SB Tippers.
