East Lancashire Hospice has today launched a campaign to raise awareness of our community services.

The hospice, which has a footprint covering Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley, is renowned for its 10-bed in-patient unit – but less is known about the other community services available.

Seven patients have taken part in the campaign, each of whom have accessed and benefited from a number of hospice services, to highlight the community support which is as individual as the patient.

Patients include Natasha Worrall from Accrington, Anita Almond from Clayton-le-Dale, Peter Blezard from Darwen, John Taylor from Blackburn, Mark Salt from Darwen, and the late Mary Barton from Blackburn and James Butler from Oswaldtwistle.

Head of Marketing & Communications for the hospice, Beth Shutt who has led the campaign, said: “Not many people know that we also care for people in their own homes as well as the specialist care and therapies available in the hospice building - so we are hoping that this campaign will highlight the range of services that we offer to our entire community. I'd like to thank the seven patients who have taken part in the campaign and their families for sharing their stories and helping to raise awareness of the services."

The hospice community services include specialist nursing and advice to help patients manage complex medical symptoms at home. We also offer overnight support and observation which means the loved ones who are caring for the patient get the opportunity to rest. Daytime support also allows patients to continue activities and social interests and get out and about.

The campaign runs from 9-22 July and the seven patient stories will be featured online, in the local media, on bus shelter posters and on posters and thousands of leaflets posted through the doors of homes across the towns.
