East Lancashire Hospice

Fundraising is a snip for this pair!

A mother and daughter team proved they are a cut above when they had their heads shaved for East Lancashire Hospice.

Jane Tweddle from Clayton-le-Moors, and mum Linda Crowther, 63, from Clitheroe, braved the razor in memory of Linda’s husband Stuart Crowther, who died in the hospice on February 14.

Their sponsored event took place on Sunday and the pair were cheered on by family and friends – raising over £1000 towards the cause on the day itself.

They were joined in the hairdresser’s chair by Jane’s colleague June Robinson and her son Charlie Robinson, and Mark Woodruff, a friend and colleague of Stuart’s, also from Clayton-le-Moors.

Stuart, 66, was diagnosed with lung cancer at the beginning of 2017 and, following surgery, underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He was later diagnosed with secondary cancer and taken into hospital again in January 2018. He spent a week in the hospice before he died and Jane, 44, of Clayton, said the care her stepfather was given was invaluable.

“He went to the hospice for the last week of his life and it made a huge difference,” she said. “It enabled my mum to stay with him as long as she could and it was a beautiful place, really peaceful and serene. The staff helped my mum, not just Stuart, and they were fantastic.”

Jane has fundraised for the hospice before through her workplace, the Coop in Clayton-le-Moors, and said the idea of having her head shaved just came to her one day.

“I’m not brave enough to do a sky dive but this was something I could do to help,” she said. “Already it’s helping my mum because the fundraising and gathering prizes gave her something to focus on.”

Jane said she has smashed her £2,000 target – which includes £118 from donations instead of flowers at Stuart’s funeral. The grandmother-of-one is also receiving support from daughter Kealey Exell, 23, and her son, Korbyn Aspin, 10. Jane also thanked her sister Amanda, and her Son Jack for all their help.

Jane said: “It was fantastic. I had a good turn out on the day and raised over £1,000 on the day and over £2,000 in total. It feels fantastic – I feel liberated with my new skin head. Everybody at work loves my new style and say they are very proud of me.”

Jane’s nieces Amee and Hannah are also raising funds for East Lancashire Hospice. Amee recently took part in a 3-legged pub crawl and Hannah will be jumping from a plane for a sponsored sky dive in August.

Jane said: “We hope the final figure to be nearer £3500 once all the events are completed and then we’ll present a cheque to the hospice as a family.
