Housekeeper Volunteer

Location                                 East Lancashire Hospice

Accountable to:                     Head of Facilities

(This person will be your main point of contact while volunteering. They will provide you with the support and supervision necessary for you to perform your role)                                               

Role requirements:                Two Satisfactory references

Enhanced DBS check (an enhanced DBS check will only be required for those roles which involve regular, unsupervised contact with patients)                                                                 

Role Summary

With supervision and direction of the Head of Facilities to undertake general duties which would include maintaining a clean, welcoming and tidy environment for patients, visitors staff and volunteers.

When we need you to be available 

Below are the time slots that we need volunteers to carry out this role.  You can volunteer for one or more than one-time slot.  You will be asked to detail your availability on your application form.

Skills, knowledge, abilities and qualities

  • General housekeeping experience
  • Good communication skills
  • To interact as part of a team
  • Ability to understand and apply attention to detail             
  • Excellent standards of observation
  • Pride in ensuring that environment is as good as it can be for patients /families 

    What we would like you to do

  • Removing unwanted flowers and replenish flower vases and displays
  • Providing care to house plants
  • Checking Inpatients rooms that are awaiting admissions are welcoming and tidy
  • Checking all lounges that they are welcoming and tidy
  • Checking all Visitors waiting areas to ensure that they are welcoming and tidy
  • Checking Patients counselling rooms are welcoming and tidy – tissues replenished etc
  • Cleaning and restocking display shelves in reception
  • Restocking the reception sweet trolley
  • Tidy kitchen cupboards in patient /visitors kitchen
  • Checking that the inpatient /visitors kitchen is at the required standard
  • The removal of old newspapers – magazines from waiting areas.

Reporting any issues to Head of Facilities after checking:

  • Visitor’s toilets that they are at the required standard  
  • Walls for marks and repairs needed
  • Glass in doors for marks and streaks
  • Offices for cleaning issues and maintenance issues by discussing with office staff. 

    Reporting any issues to Head of Facilities after discussing:

  • With CaST clinical staff for any cleaning or maintenance issues

  • With clinical staff for any cleaning for or maintenance issues

  • With complementary therapy staff for any cleaning issues or maintenance issues

  • With inpatient clinical staff for any cleaning or maintenance issues

General Requirements

Undertake training and development applicable to the role.

Be friendly, respectful and courteous to patients, visitors, staff, customers and other volunteers at all times

To ensure the information you have access to, as part of your role is kept secure and confidential.

Work at all times to safeguard the rights of individuals promoting their wellbeing and protecting those at risk from harm by advising staff of any concerns.

Act in a way that upholds the hospice’s values which are:

  • Patients are individuals and have a right to respect, privacy, dignity and choice
  • Staff and volunteers are vital to the hospice’s success, and it is their contribution which provides the hospice with its quality service and reputation
  • Our services should be focused on meeting our patients’ requirements
  • Value for money is achieved making the most effective use of available resources
  • Ensure that personal actions and conduct apply with hospice policies and procedures
  • Ensure effective use of hospice resources
