Paul Irving - Healthcare assistant for Hospice at Home

Name: Paul Irving

Job title: Healthcare Assistant for Hospice at Home

What does your role involve?

I stay with patients overnight at their homes. We give emotional support to both the patients and their families, provide care and liase with district nurses.

How did you get the experience to do the role you do now?

I came to the hospice through working for a care company. I worked with the elderly, usually during the day but the company also began to expand into overnight, palliative care and that was my initial experience.

What time do you start and finish work each day typically?

I usually start at 9pm at night and stay with patients until 7am the following morning.

How do you wind down after a hard day at work?

I unwind by playing sport, mainly football and I also enjoy going on walks with my young daughter and girlfriend.

What’s the best thing about working for the hospice?

The best things are meeting lots of different and interesting people and there is a lot of opportunity to help people. I find this very rewarding.
