East Lancashire Hospice

Sisters in Sobriety!

Four sisters and their partners have been fundraising in memory of their brother Paul. Liz, Lorraine, Dionne and Stella tell their story:

"Grateful for the love and care shown to our brother Paul Blackhurst, we decided to do something for the hospice in his memory. We thought that 'Dry January' would make Paul smile and so the challenge was born, assisted by Stella's partner Marina and Dionne's wife Julie. Julie also did a New Year swim at Lee dam to raise extra money.

Paul was the third of eight siblings; after a distinguished career in the Army, during which time he was awarded a BEM, he retired with his wife, best friend, soulmate, Margaret to Colne.

Not ready to hang up his workboots just yet, he started working for Lancashire Constabulary; at the same time he was actively involved in the Colne Branch of the Royal British Legion, becoming Branch Chairman, Poppy Appeal organiser, Parade Marshal….and taking on many other tasks.

Paul was much loved and respected by all who knew him; he was a gentleman to the end and did many a good turn to those in need.

Following a short stay in hospital, it became apparent that Paul’s time was coming to an end…….when asked by his nurse what he really wanted, his answer was simple….”I want a window to look out and to know that Margaret is looked after”.

To their great credit, and earning the gratitude of the family, the nursing team were able to secure a place for Paul at East Lancashire Hospice - a relief and a blessing that he could finally find some comfort and rest…..and peace of mind for the family.

Although Paul only spent two days at the hospice, in those days he was treated with kindness and  respect at all times by everyone who had contact with him. Margaret was cared for and made to feel at ease, knowing that Paul was in the most capable of hands.

Nursing staff, and volunteers alike, were considerate and compassionate; nothing was too much trouble for them.

When Paul closed his eyes for the last time, he was able to slip away with dignity and a sense of calm.

Originally, the aim was to raise £500 but that target was soon surpassed and we are proud to have achieved a final total of £1800 in Paul’s honour….  a token of our appreciation for the care Paul received and in recognition of the continued great work done by all at East Lancs Hospice."
