East Lancs Hospice
East Lancashire Hospice is a registered charity, founded in 1984. We support and care for patients with a life limiting illness, their families and others close to them. We provide this in a number of ways; at the hospice and in people’s own homes across our community of Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley.
With approximately 120 employees and over 250 volunteers, our people are our biggest asset whom we value tremendously. An exciting and new opportunity has arisen as part of the re-structure of our catering team, for a sous chef working circa 30 hours flexibly over seven days with two days off. Due to the nature of the organisation being a charity, the catering department is assisted through many of our wonderful volunteers and so this sous chef position will be different than your ‘everyday’ chef role
You will be responsible with assisting in the high quality of food preparation, cooking and finishing skills to support the smooth running of the catering team. As the sous chef you will ensure the quality of food and speed of service is maintained both for our patients and café retreat. In the absence of the catering lead you will direct the team and manage all services, coordinating a large team of staff and volunteers in a positive and encouraging style. You will also need to demonstrate creative flair when writing specials and keep waste to a minimum.
The hospice staff and volunteers are paramount to the success of the hospice and therefore it is extremely important the successful applicant for this Chef post has strong people skills, a positive attitude and approachable nature.
The Successful Candidate
You must ensure a high level of service is maintained whilst adopting our core values in everything you do. You will have experience in a similar position and be able to lead a brigade in a busy service, key communication skills are essential for this job role. You will have a sound culinary knowledge and preferably be qualified to level 3 in Professional cookery. Strong hygienic practices and food safety management are paramount, you must also have good experience of purchasing supplies and be able to work within a budget.

In return, the Salary for this post is £16,891 pro rata for 30 hours, these hours support our core services between 8am and 5pm, and seven days a week, you must also therefore work one weekend in every three. The catering team have an excellent working kitchen with strong culinary experience throughout with Café Retreat recently being awarded a 5* hygiene rating.
