East Lancashire Hospice

Triumphant Trio!

A trio of youngsters have raised hundreds of pounds for the hospice in memory of their Granpa.

Alex Pollitt, 11, from Sabden, together with Dylan, 9, and Melody, 6, from Clitheroe, wanted to take part in an event to help raise money for East Lancashire Hospice – who cared for their Granpa, Barry Webb, before he passed away in 2014.

The determined trio, signed up to run the East Lancashire Hospice Junior 2K, raising an impressive total of just over £400 between them.

Alex’s Mum Kate said: “All three children have strong memories of their Granpa. They also know how much help and support the hospice gave us at such a difficult time. It’s wonderful that they chose to raise money for the hospice so it can continue to help other people just like us.

"My Dad was introduced to the hospice in the latter stages of his illness. He was very reluctant to go at first, because he thought it was somewhere you go to die. Thankfully he was proved wrong. When he did go in, the hospice team provided fantastic pain management and dietary planning, which enabled him to come again for a few months.

“Because of this positive experience, he was comfortable going into the hospice in his final few days. The support we all received as a family was invaluable.”

The children’s Granma, Jean Webb said: “The race was a wonderful family event, which is testament to the hospice and the organisers. I am so proud and in awe of my Grandchildren and their Granpa would have been too."

Dylan and Melody are no strangers to raising money for the hospice. Last year, Dylan completed the 250m Great North Swim on Lake Windermere, raising over £500 pounds and the whole family took part in the 11-mile sponsored Ribble Valley Pub Walk. Alex has been inspired by his cousins fundraising and plans to take part in the Great North Swim with his cousin in June.
