Zest Cafe Lounge

An 'angel' is hoping to win this year's East Lancashire Hospice Corporate Challenge.

For Pip Kelly, the owner of Zest Cafe Lounge, from Darwen, it is her second year taking part in the challenge. As one of the inaugural teams Zest last year raised around £3,800 – an outstanding amount for a business with only eight staff.

But it wasn't Pip's first effort of raising much-needed cash for the Blackburn-based hospice.

She was one of a group of women christened Sarah's Angels who collected an astonishing £20,000 in memory of one of their friends nursery worker and mother-of-two Sarah Glover who died of cervical cancer aged only 36 four years ago.

Pip said: "Sarah was looked after at the hospice and the care she received made me aware of what a great place it is. Since then I have done everything I can to help raise money for them."

After studying on a catering course Pip opened a cafe 17 years ago aptly named Pip's Pantry. Three years ago the Pantry was refurbished and became the Zest Cafe Lounge serving coffee and cakes during the day and wine and cocktails in the evening. It's now open seven days a week from 9am until late.

Last year Pip's main fundraiser was a Rock and Raise music festival at Level One in Darwen. This year she aims to top that with a family fun day where children can also get involved.

Pip said: "Not only have my staff been so supportive helping organise events and fundraising ideas but our customers have been so very generous contributing to the success of our efforts."

Zest has become a popular venue for baby showers, children's birthday parties, christenings, hen parties and outside catering. It has also become a hit with its signature drink - the Zest Punch! The cocktail is made up of vodka, Amaretto, Southern Comfort, orange, pineapple and grenadine. Popular menus at Zest are Thursday's steak nights and Sunday's Yorkshire Pudding wraps.
