Talking about death and dying is not an easy subject. It can feel heavy, uncomfortable, and sometimes overwhelming to even think about, let alone talk about.
But avoiding the conversation doesn’t make it easier. In fact, it can make things harder.
At East Lancashire Hospice, we believe in being open, honest and straightforward. That means we talk about death using clear language. We say ‘died’ and ‘death’, because these words matter. They help us understand what’s happening, and they give us a shared language when we need it most.
Why words matter
It’s common to hear phrases like ‘passed away’ or ‘lost their battle’. These come from a place of care, but they can sometimes make things less clear.
When we don’t use direct language, it can be harder for people, especially children, or those already struggling, to fully understand what has happened. It can also make grief more complicated. Being honest about death helps people begin to process it.
There’s no perfect way to talk about death. But being clear and open is often the most helpful place to start.
Talking sooner can help
When life is busy and we’re feeling well, it can seem like there’s no need to talk about death. It’s something many of us put off.
But if we wait until someone is seriously unwell, or until the end of life is very near, it can be much harder to have these conversations.
Talking about death earlier, about what matters to us, what we would want, and what we’re worried about, can make things clearer for everyone. It can bring reassurance, not just for you, but for the people who care about you.
Many people tell us they want to be ‘strong’ for their friends and families, or that they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. Talking openly can ease fears and help people feel less alone.
More than end of life care
People often think hospices are only about the very end of life. But that’s only part of what we do.
At East Lancashire Hospice, we support people and their friends and families in many different ways; emotionally, physically and spiritually. We’re here to help people at the end of life, but we also focus on the quality of life too.
We understand that life can be complex, and people’s situations can be incredibly hard. We don’t gloss over that. We’re here to listen, to support, and to guide, without bombarding you with clinical jargon and overwhelming you.
We’re here for you
We know these conversations aren’t easy. But they are important.
By talking openly about death and dying, we can help remove some of the fear and stigma that still surrounds them. We can make space for honest conversations, for planning, and for support.
At East Lancashire Hospice, we’re proud of the care we provide and the community we’re part of. We speak openly because we care deeply; our patients and their friends and families are at the heart of what we do.
We want you to feel supported every step of the way. If you’re thinking about these conversations, or if you need support, we’re here to help.
