Volunteering with us

Our amazing volunteers, Shirley and Boo the Dog

Our volunteers are at the heart of East Lancashire Hospice. From patient-facing roles to fundraising, retail and support services, volunteering is a chance to use your skills, meet new people and be part of something special.

Whatever time you can give, and whatever your background, there’s a place for you here.

Register your interest by completing the volunteer application form below. You can select the departments you’d like to support, as well as the days and times that work best for you.

Help patients get to and from the Hospice safely and comfortably, offering a friendly face and a reassuring presence on the journey. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys driving, meeting people and making a direct, meaningful difference to someone’s day. You’ll be supporting patients to access specialist palliative care and support, often providing the conversation, kindness and calm that turns a simple trip into something they genuinely appreciate.

Help keep the Hospice feeling welcoming, calm and comfortable by supporting our team with cleaning in non‑clinical areas. This role is perfect if you enjoy creating tidy, pleasant spaces and want to make a real difference behind the scenes. You’ll learn practical facilities skills, work alongside a friendly team, and play an important part in making sure our patients, their friends and families feel at ease the moment they walk through the door.

Bring warmth, comfort and great service to the heart of the Hospice by supporting our Café Retreat. This role is ideal if you enjoy meeting people and creating a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll help make each visit feel special by greeting guests, serving drinks, or keeping the space calm and inviting. It’s a friendly, hands‑on role where you can build confidence, learn practical café skills (like using the coffee machine and till), and be part of a supportive team that makes a real difference to patients, their friends and families who rely on the café as a peaceful place to pause.

Be the welcoming first point of contact for everyone who arrives at the Hospice. This role is great for someone who enjoys helping people, staying organised and keeping a busy space running smoothly. You’ll greet visitors, support the admin team and help create a calm, friendly atmosphere from the moment someone walks through the door. It’s a great opportunity to build confidence, develop reception and communication skills, and play an important part in ensuring patients, their friends and families feel supported.

Support our Events Fundraiser in bringing Hospice events to life! From early planning to helping shape the final experience. This role is perfect if you enjoy being organised, creative and part of a friendly team. You’ll help connect with local businesses, volunteers and community groups, assist with promotional materials, and play a key part in helping our events run smoothly. It’s a great opportunity to build confidence, develop admin, event planning and communication skills, and be involved in the exciting behind‑the‑scenes work that helps raise vital funds for hospice care.

Help shape the beautiful outdoor spaces that bring comfort, calm and joy to everyone who visits the Hospice. As a Gardening Volunteer, you’ll be part of a friendly team who keep our gardens vibrant and welcoming, where patients and their friends and families come to relax, reflect and breathe. If you love being outdoors, getting hands‑on and seeing the difference your work makes, this role is incredibly rewarding. You’ll learn new gardening skills, take pride in nurturing spaces that truly matter, and play a key part in creating a peaceful environment.

As a Retail Shop Volunteer, you’ll help create a welcoming, friendly space where customers and donors feel valued and supported. You’ll be part of a team that keeps our hospice shops running smoothly; serving customers, preparing donated items for sale and helping to create an enjoyable retail experience. If you enjoy meeting new people, working as part of a team and seeing the difference your time makes, this role is incredibly rewarding.
