East Lancs Hospice

East Lancashire Hospice is a registered charity, founded in 1984. We support and care for patients with a life limiting illness, their families and others close to them. We provide this in several ways; at the hospice and in people’s own homes across our community of Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley.

With approximately 120 employees and over 250 volunteers, our people are our biggest asset whom we value tremendously. Catering Assistant

An exciting and new opportunity has arisen as part of the re-structure of our catering team, for a catering assistant circa 16 hours flexibly over seven days with two days off, you will be required to work one weekend in three. Due to the nature of the organisation being a charity, the catering department is assisted through many of our wonderful volunteers and so this catering assistant position will be different than your ‘everyday’ catering assistant job role.

You will be responsible with assisting in the preparation, cooking and serving of food and drink to help support the smooth running of the catering department. Contribute and help maintain a high level of cleanliness in the catering department and key service areas that our patients and clients have come to expect. You must have a friendly professional approach and help maintain high levels of customer care. You will effectively communicate dietary requirements of our patients and guests. You will also help promote up and coming catering events to help the hospice meet their income generation goals. Effective communication is essential to this post, and you will have to be able to remain professional when engaging in constructive feedback when dealing with our patients and visiting guests. Experience in processing money transactions is preferred but full on the job training can be given. Contribute to coordinating a large team of staff and volunteers in a positive and encouraging style.

The Successful Candidate

The hospice staff and volunteers are paramount to the success of the hospice and therefore it is extremely important the successful applicant for this catering assistant post has strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude and approachable nature.

You will hopefully have experience in a similar position, but training can be given to the right candidate. You should have an interest in food and drink service and be able to recognise good customer care. Strong hygienic practices and knowledge food safety management systems is beneficial, but training can be given. You must ensure a high level of service is maintained whilst adopting our core values in everything you do

What we Offer

In return, the Salary for this post is £9,568 pro rata for 16 hours. These hours support our core services between 8am and 7pm seven days a week, you must also therefore work one weekend in every three.  The catering team have an excellent working kitchen with strong culinary experience throughout with Café Retreat recently being awarded a 5* hygiene rating.
