Accrington man honours friend at Ironman
An Accrington man honoured the promise he made to a friend who passed away from cancer to complete an ironman competition.Scott Slater, 29 from Accrington took on the gruelling 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run at the Bolton Ironman on Sunday, with around 2,500 fellow competitors.
Scott completed the course in a time of 12 hours and 40 minutes.
The Blackburn Road Runner said he upped the stakes after making a promise to friend Warren Wolstencroft who died in 2013 after a four-year cancer battle: “I promised Warren when he was in the hospice that I would do a half ironman to raise money in his memory in 2014. Unfortunately I suffered a bad knee injury a few months before which meant I had to withdraw. Following my recovery I decided to attempt the full ironman for good measure.”
“This is my way of giving something back and play a tiny part in funding the hospice. Warren was also very big on his charity work and it's a perfect way to honour his legacy.
“I'm going to have a few weeks rest before going back to running and thinking about the next challenge.
“When I visited Warren at the hospice the facilities and staff were exceptional. It was so welcoming and the rooms very private. It gave me a fresh outlook on the hospice as it was my first visit. I know he was well looked after.”
Scott's fundraising total stands at £510 and his online giving page is http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/…/showFundraiserProfilePage…
