Big-hearted Tom Saunders from Blackburn presented a cheque for £4,500 to the hospice in memory of his much loved mother, Sue Saunders.

Mr Saunders’ mother, Sue, died in 1999 after a brief spell of care at the hospice. Tom decided to take on a number of challenges throughout 2019, the 20th anniversary of the loss of Sue, to help raise vital funds for the hospice with the support of family and friends.

Tom commented: “The hospice provided my mother and all the family with such wonderful support in the latter stages of her illness. We would like to support their fundraising work as a family so that it can continue for many other families.”

Over £4,000 was raised through a series of events. It was a family effort. Members of the Saunders and Hargreaves families, both young and old, raised funds through monthly challenges with everything from a half marathon to canoeing, braving the world’s longest zip wire, a 75 mile bike ride and more.

The ended their year of challenges with a walk from East Lancashire Hospice to Clitheroe, where the Saunders used to live as a family.

Lucinda Bury, Marketing and Fundraising Assistant, said: “Thank you all so much and well done to all of you for raising a tremendous amount for the hospice!”
