Meet Our Apprentices - Kevin Rompca

A former soldier with ten years’ experience working in security in Europe, Kevin Rompca returned to the UK for a different pace of life. After spending a number of years volunteering at the Hospice, Kevin started his apprenticeship in January 2020 as a Production Chef In our busy Café Retreat which is based within the East Lancashire Hospice main building.

The North Lancashire Training Group scheme allowed Kevin to combine the practical aspects of training with online learning and Kevin has found his tutor very supportive. During his time, Kevin has successfully achieved Level 2 on his apprenticeship scheme whilst also completing his Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English. Of working in the hospice, Kevin said “It’s good to take care of people, and it’s a different kind of environment from what I was used to. I like cooking, and everyone is so welcoming; it’s nice to make people happy.”

Kevin went on to comment on how Café Retreat and the Hospice have allowed him make the change and develop a range of skills. “I was originally educated in Germany so I had no UK qualifications. I am so grateful to Chef and the Hospice for giving me a trade and supporting me.”

Head of Catering, Lee Hyatt who is also Kevin’s line manager commented on the value he has added to the team during his time both as a volunteer and as an apprentice. “Kevin is a unique success story, and one we are proud to be a part of.”
