Remembering Dorothy in the Sunflower Memory Garden

The Sunflower Memory Garden here at East Lancashire Hospice offers a lovely way for Susan and Michael Rishton, their daughter Gemma and her husband Mark, together with Susan’s sister Christine, brother in law Raymond and nephews David & Mathew to remember their mother, mother in-law and grandmother Dorothy Webber. 

Dorothy was cared for at the hospice on three separate occasions; latterly for end of life care, just before Christmas and in April this year, before being discharged to a nursing home in Lytham near to her daughter Christine and family where Dorothy spent a couple of weeks before she sadly passed away. 

Susan and Michael who live in Accrington explain what it meant to Dorothy and to them all as a family to be supported by the hospice “We initially received support as a family from the Hospice at Home Team which was very good.  When Mum was later admitted to the hospice, she was very happy, felt safe and didn’t want to leave.

As an extended family, together with my sister Christine, brother in law Raymond and nephews David and Mathew, our experience of the hospice was a good one, we were all really happy with the service that that was provided and couldn’t fault it. 

We all support the hospice however we can from participating in the Light up a Life service and Sponsored Walks to purchasing Christmas Cards.  Mum also donated lots of her furniture to the hospice. Dedicating a Sunflower in the Memory Garden seemed the perfect way to honour Mum’s memory and further support the hospice after they did so much for us as a family”.
