Bubbling with excitement to give something back
Mum Sarah Richards credits the health services in East Lancashire with making her life easier as she copes with muscular dystrophy. So she’s saying thanks – and making memories with her eight-year-old daughter – by taking part in this year’s Bubble Rush.
The 32-year-old had suffered from chronic pain all her life and was diagnosed with the debilitating condition, which weakens the muscles in 2014. .
Sarah struggles mainly with the muscles in her hips and legs, as well as her chest, arms and shoulders being affected. She must undergo heart scans and eye tests every six months to ensure those muscles have not deteriorated and she was forced to give up her admin job because the pain means she can’t hold a pen. “It will only get worse, there’s no stopping it, and I’m having physiotherapy to ease it,” says Sarah. “I’m also trying not to let it affect my mental health because it can be quite depressing when you’re 32 and you can’t do the things you want to do.”
Mum Linda, 57, moved up from Reading to live with her and daughter Amelia because some days she has problems getting out of bed. The trio will complete the course together, with Sarah on crutches.
“Muscular dystrophy is still quite new to me and I’m trying to deal with how much I can and can’t do,” Sarah says. “I want to do as much as possible with my daughter while I still can because it will be fun for her and, for me, being able to raise money will make me feel like I’ve accomplished something. The hospice is a good cause and taking part in Bubble Rush will enable me to make memories with Amelia and my mum.”
