Morecambe Bay Walk

If you are booked on to the walk, please read the following information carefully:

Thank you for registering to take part in the Morecambe Bay Walk in support of East Lancashire Hospice. We're looking forward to an incredible day with you, and we want to make sure you're fully prepared for the experience ahead. Please take a few moments to read the important information below.

T-Shirt Collection

Event t-shirts are now ready to collect from Merton House (the building on the left as you enter the hospice gates).
Collection is available until 4pm on Friday, 16th May. Please note the office is open 9am-5pm Monday - Friday.
If you’re unable to collect by then, don’t worry—you’ll be able to pick your t-shirt up on the day of the walk.

Coach Transport from Grange

A coach is available for £10 per person, departing from Grange Railway Station at 7:45am and taking us to the start of the walk in Arnside, please register with a member of our Fundraising Team between 7:15am - 7:40am if you would like to take the coach. Alternatively, if you are driving directly to the start of the walk (41 The Promenade, Arnside, Carnforth LA5 0HA) we ask you to be there for 8:00am and register in with a member of our team.
Payment for the coach can be made by cash or card on the day.
Parking is available nearby, meaning once the walk finishes in Grange (from Arnside), your car will be close by for an easy journey home.

Please note - if you are not getting the coach, you will have to make your own way back to Arnside for your car. Trains from Grange - Arnside vary and can be very busy.

Arrival in Arnside

Once the coach arrives at Arnside, our Fundraising Team will register our group in with Guide Over Sands Marshals and we will all attend a safety briefing at 9am. If you are not in attendance for the safety briefing you will not be able to continue on the walk. Once you get off the coach, please stay with East Lancashire Hospice team so we know you are taking part and no one is left behind.

Toilet Facilities

  • Council toilets are available for 30p.

  • Please only use toilets inside local businesses if you're making a purchase.

Fitness & Safety

The walk is around 9 miles across variable terrain, so you must be physically fit and able to complete the distance with ease.
For your safety, if we feel you are not fit to walk, you will not be allowed to participate.

A mandatory safety briefing will begin at your walk start time (9am), led by Michael Wilson (King’s Guide to the Sands). Please pay close attention—the bay can be dangerous.

What to Bring

  • Suncream

  • Hat

  • Water bottle / drink

  • Comfortable footwear including a spare pair

  • Towel

  • Lunch / snacks

Dogs are welcome, but they are your responsibility. Please ensure they are well-behaved and do not disturb others. If your dog runs off, we cannot stop the walk or search for it—you must remain with the group.

On the Day – What to Expect

  • Once Michael begins his briefing, all walkers are under his care.

  • The walk starts along the rocky, sometimes slippery headland—please take care.

  • We then move onto the sands, where we will be joined by two tractors.
These are emergency vehicles—do not place belongings on them.

  • If you or someone in your group needs help, raise an arm and a marshall (in yellow) will assist.

  • Michael (in blue) is the only walk guide. His partner Jo supports on the day.

  • We walk as one group. Michael will control the pace and stops.

At the River Kent, all walkers must line up along the edge to avoid churning the sand.
If you’re tired or unsure, get on the tractor before the river.

After the crossing, we’ll stop for 15–20 minutes to rest and eat, before continuing the final stretch to Grange.

No one is allowed to walk ahead of the guide for safety reasons—even if you have train connections to make.

End of the Walk

  • The walk ends on the promenade in Grange, where Jo & Michael will be selling walk certificates to support the cost of running the tractors.
These are available for a minimum £2 donation (cash or card accepted).

  • Public toilets are available on the left-hand side of the prom for a small fee.

We can’t wait to see you on the sands—thank you for supporting East Lancashire Hospice!
