Gill Leacy
Gill Leacy - Trustee
Gillian (Gill) Leacy, a Trustee and retired headteacher from Blackburn, began her journey with East Lancashire Hospice 27 years ago when her husband received home care and later moved into the Inpatient Unit where he died.
This personal experience inspired her to volunteer at the hospice after retiring. She started as a driver, transporting patients to Day Therapy sessions and clinics; before her role expanded to include fundraising, leading bereavement groups, giving talks, working in the hospice charity shops, and eventually becoming a Trustee.
Gill's proudest moments include the hospice receiving an Outstanding award from the CQC and the personal connections she made with patients and their carers. She values fundraising events, such as the annual ball and midnight walks, and always feels appreciated for the support she provides.
Gill has experienced the hospice’s comprehensive care firsthand, both for her husband years ago and her son more recently. She knows the hospice’s expertise is invaluable to patients and families, provided unconditionally and without prejudice.
Volunteering gave Gill purpose after her bereavement and connected her with like-minded individuals working towards the hospice’s mission. What sets East Lancashire Hospice apart, according to Gill, is the quality time staff spend with patients and their families, creating a peaceful, supportive environment unlike a typical hospital. The hospice’s high staff-to-patient ratio allows for individualised care, lifting the burden from carers and allowing patients to relax and enjoy various activities.
Being selected as one of the 40 faces for the hospice’s 40th anniversary book is a profound honour for Gill. It recognises her dual roles as a hands-on volunteer and as a Trustee involved in the growth, planning and strategy of the hospice.
East Lancashire Hospice is like a second home to Gill, a place of peace and support where everyone is valued and she feels incredibly proud to be part of its journey.
