Smart idea raises cash for charity

Nadia Hassan from Great Harwood came up with the bright idea of filling empty Smarties tubes with 20ps to raise money for East Lancashire Hospice.

She discovered that a tube of Smarties can hold £12 worth of 20p pieces and decided to take on the challenge.

Nadia manages the Rishton and Blackburn Slimming World groups and set members the challenge of filling the tubes with loose change for charity.

As a result of this ingenious idea, a total of £292.67 was raised for the hospice.

Nadia, Slimming World Consultant for the Rishton and Blackburn groups, said: “I’ve always supported the hospice and helped to spread the word about their services at my Slimming World Groups.

“We had a Slimming World district meeting earlier in the year and I discovered that a group of consultants did the Smarties Tube Challenge for the Pendleside Hospice and I thought, ‘if they can do it, then why don’t I try the challenge for East Lancashire Hospice?’ I didn’t expect to raise a huge amount from the challenge but I wanted to do my bit for a local charity.”

“I asked the members at my Slimming World groups if they would like to get involved and help me to raise money for the hospice. It meant a lot to the members as some of them have lost family members at the hospice so they were all keen to get involved.”
