Role description
The East Lancashire Hospice (ELH) Board of trustees is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the Hospice, ensuring good governance, healthy finances and effective probity. The Trustees ensure there is a clear, strategic direction which is in line with its charitable purpose. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the Chief Executive (who is accountable to the Board) and the Senior Management Team to enable the Hospice to grow and thrive.
Our patients, their families and others close to them are at the centre of everything we do. We are driven by their needs through their journey from the point of diagnosis and through to death and into bereavement – whether that’s here at the Hospice or in the community.
We are now looking for new trustees to join our Board and we would particularly welcome applications from individuals who have experience of managing business or care services or community development programmes, at a senior level.
We would also welcome candidates with:
- Financial/commercial skills
- Healthcare/clinical skills
- Income Generation/digital/marketing and communications skills
- HR skills

Job Title Trustee
Overall purpose
The Board of Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the organisations aim, objectives and goals in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the hospice and regulatory guidelines
Time Commitment
- The Trustee Board usually meets ten times a year. The Board meetings are up to 2 hours long each. Travel time and meeting preparation are excluded from the 2 hours
- Trustees may be asked to join one of three governance committees which meet quarterly and last approximately two hours. We also operate 3 sub-committees which you may be asked to join
- Trustees may be asked to support the Hospice at other events
- Trustees are expected to complete mandatory training and participate in an annual appraisal
- Trustees are appointed initially for a 3 year term
- Trustees are re – elected every three years thereafter at the AGM
